Description
The reason for this dissertation is to raise awareness of the systematic ethnic cleansing of the Muslim Cham Albanians by Greece during the Second World War (WWII). The minority Chams of Greece as they are known in Albania or the "Tsamides" as they are known in Greece, resulted in a final expulsion of 45,000 remaining Muslim Albanians during WWII. For the purpose of this dissertation the name 'Chameria' for the region and the name Chams for the inhabitants will be used.
In order to understand who the Chams Albanians are a short historical and geographical review is helpful.
Albania, bordering Greece and opposite Italy are one ethnicity and speak dialects of the same language. To this day they are made of two main groups, the Gegs that formed majority and lived in the north of Albania and the Tosks (which Cham Albanians are part of) that live in the south of the country. Albanians are the direct descendants of ancient Illyrians, speaking one of the oldest Indo European languages of Europe and are situated in the heart of Europe.
